By dc.internet.com Staff November 1, 2000 Columbia Capital is part of a group investing $190 million in Pihana Pacific, a Hong Kong Internet data center business with a new model of neutral co-location facilities to be rolled out across major locations throughout the Asia/Pacific region. Other investors included Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Private Equity, Lone Tree Capital, Mori Building Co., Ltd., and Hewlett Packard. The Alexandria, Va.-based Columbia Capital is the Pihana's largest investor. Pihana's carrier-neutral Internet exchanges (IX) set it apart from other facilities because Pihana Pacific is not affiliated with any carrier, Internet network provider or bandwidth reseller, so customers are allowed to choose from the leading providers of global Internet backbone or private backbone access. By building a broad geographic presence throughout Asia/Pacific, these IX-enhanced data centers offer absolute neutrality and provide customers with a business, as well as technology-based solution, that increases their return on their IT investment. Pihana Pacific will use funds to build neutral IX/data centers throughout Asia Pacific including Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. The company currently has a operations in Honolulu and will open a Los Angeles facility later this year. The Los Angeles facility will enhance service for Asia/Pacific companies distributing content and services in the United States and offer U.S. companies an opportunity to strategically interact with Asia/Pacific customers.
