Virginia may be the Internet capital of the world, as Old Dominion Gov. Jim Gilmore says, but there still are other areas in which to expand. Arlington, Va.'s 2nd Century Communications, an open network application service provider (ASP), is bringing in top executives to oversee their western and northeastern regional offices.

Janette Corby is being named president of the western region, and Jim Rivette, formerly the vice president of channel management, will be the new northeast regional president.

Both will report directly to Diane Gongaware, 2nd Century's senior vice president of sales, and will be responsible for managing their respective region's operations, including recruiting sales channel partners and driving the channel to sell 22nd Century's package of business tools and communications services.

Currently 2nd Century has opened offices in Portland and San Francisco and will expand the western region to include Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Sacramento. Corby will reside in the San Francisco office, 2nd Century's western regional headquarters.

Corby joins 2nd Century from Allegiance Telecom, where she served as regional vice president from 1998 to 2000. In this role, Corby provided leadership and direction for the deployment of the newly created Pacific region. Corby helped establish seven new markets, overseeing the recruiting, development and training of over 20 sales teams.

Prior to Allegiance, Corby served as vice president of SBC Communications from 1997 to 1998, coordinating key account changeovers and advising the SBC team on organizational, personnel, policy, strategic sales, marketing and services delivery issues.

From 1976 to 1997, Corby held several positions with Pacific Bell, including vice president of sales for the AT&T account team, executive director of product management, director of AT&T's sales and service team, director of strategic alliances for data communications, director of product management for data products, and director of the Palo Alto CATV Project.

Rivette joined 2nd Century in August 1999 as the company's first vice president of channel management and was responsible for establishing the company's channel strategy and recruiting national and regional partners.

Prior to joining 2nd Century, Rivette served as president and COO of Shared Technologies Fairchild. Under his leadership, Shared Technologies Fairchild offered shared tenant services, equipment, long distance, local access and maintenance to class A commercial office complexes, convention centers, hotels and individual businesses. Following the acquisition of Shared Technologies Fairchild by Intermedia Communications, Inc. in March 1998, Rivette added the title of corporate vice president.

Prior to taking the helm at Shared Technologies Fairchild, Rivette served as senior vice president of field operations and as the president of the shared tenant services division. Before joining Shared Technologies Fairchild, Rivette worked at United Technologies Corporation/Building Systems as vice president and general manager and at United Technologies Corporation/Otis Elevator as director of administration and manager of service marketing.

Headquartered in Arlington, Va., 2nd Century is a privately-held communications company providing small and medium businesses a complete package of business tools including high-speed Internet, desktop management solutions, self-healing software, and voice applications.
